Job Search Support: Where to Find This Essential Tool

December 12, 2019 - by Nancy Branka

Last week I was at a breakfast that included job seekers over 40, and I was struck by how weary many of them were. I felt like I was standing at Mile 22 of a marathon, yelling “You can do it!” as exhausted runners plodded by.

Let’s be honest: Job search is really challenging for mid- and late-career people. I believe the only way to get through it–to actually get to the finish line and find that great opportunity–is to get support along the way.

Luckily, we live at a time when it’s never been easier to connect with people for this support. There are so many new ways to find and interact with those who can serve as a support system.

Here are some valuable places I’ve found where we can be in the company of others who empathize and cheer us on:

Next for Me

This awesome community defines itself like this: Next for Me is a new resource that connects and inspires our generation to evolve post-50 life through new work, a new purpose or a social contribution. They also have a vibrant community site.

Phase2Careers

If you’re in the Bay Area, Phase2Careers offers lots of resources for both the over-40 professional and employer, including events.

Meetup.com

I’m a member of SF Mature Women in Tech, which is excellent and meets monthly. Search Meetup.com for local meetups in your own area, formed around your particular interests or career.

Coaches

Many career coaches specialize in working with the more experienced set. Try searching LinkedIn using “career coach” and additional keywords such as “transition” or “reinvention.”

Continuing Education

General Assembly offers excellent courses for those in tech. And if you’re not in a location where they have a physical campus (20+ U.S. cities), there’s a selection of online courses as well.
